Church of Sant Serni de Canillo
Posizione e contatto
Although most of the present building of Sant Serni is from baroque times (17th to 18th centuries), we can still see some remains of the former 12th century Romanesque construction as the most important modifications made at later times focused on the bell tower and the main nave. Inside the church of Sant Serni we find a popular Gothic style Christ King from the late 14th century made in multi-coloured wood and a baroque altarpiece dedicated to the patron saint of the chapel, the Bishop of Toulouse (third century), of which we would highlight the multi-coloured wood bust and the technique of painting on board.
Work was done in 2009 to improve the building, which revealed archaeological remains in the subsoil of the nave: studies made to date indicate that these might be structures from the initial 12th century construction or a previous Romanesque church.
These remains have been put on display in the floor itself in the central nave. A series of burials have also been found from the 7th to the 18th centuries. Outside we find the remains of Romanesque walls and a baptismal pyre, now used as a spring. Free entrance.
The tour is part of the 12 footprints - Cultural Route in Canillo.
