More trivia about Escaldes-Engordany
The Escaldes-Engordany parish was founded on 14 June 1978 and has the second largest population after Andorra la Vella. In the Middle Ages, the parish was populated with small villages, such as Engordany, Els Vilars, El Fener and Engolasters, which still maintain the characteristics of their agricultural and farming tradition, although they are now mainly residential. Escaldes has always been more tourism-oriented, thanks to its thermal springs and shopping.
The Madriu Valley in Escaldes-Engordany is particularly notable for its natural animal and plant life and cultural heritage, where you can experience medieval mountain life with the bordes, cabins, dry-stone constructions and much more. The Madriu Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is also notable for the large numbers of tourists and the exclusive, luxury boutiques all along its main avenue Carlemany, or Vivand, one of Andorra's leading shopping districts and a pedestrian area since 2013, with around 200 shops, restaurants and hotels. This unique outdoor area has a massive range of shops, including leading international brands. In this Escaldes-Engordany shopping district you'll find Illa Carlemany, which received the award for the best small shopping centre in Europe in 2012, with over 70 shops and restaurants. There is plenty of parking available in the area.
