No visit to the principality would be complete without a visit to the capital of Andorra, and Andorra la Vella has so much to enjoy. As the highest European capital, and surrounded by mountains and lush green forests, it's quite literally a breath of fresh air, but with shopping, leisure, culture and history galore – result! Here's a taster of what to see and do when you're there.

What to see and do in the capital of Andorra

If you're ready to shop till you drop, and get incredible value for your money, then the capital of Andorra has just what you need, with a fabulous selection of shops and commercial centres. The Shopping Mile is a purchase paradise with an incredible range of stores, whether you're looking for clothes, jewellery, watches electrical goods, perfume, sportswear...they've got the lot! The area between the famous commercial spot Avinguda Meritxell to Vivand, and Fener Boulevard is pedestrianised and there's a fabulous choice of eateries to keep your strength up and enjoy a break from your retail therapy. The open-air shopping area in the Old Quarter is also great if you enjoy browsing charming little stores and getting a feel for Andorra's culture.

The Grans Magatzems Pyrénées is the department store par excellence, in an iconic early twentieth century building in the Pyrenees Hyper Centre. With shops, bars, restaurants in a fantastic setting, you can easily spend the day here.

The Old Quarter of Andorra la Vella

With its cobbled streets, and traditional charm, the Old Quarter of Andorra la Vella boasts a wealth of art, historical monuments and original buildings to explore, and is perfect for exploring on foot.

A good starting point is the Plaza del Consell, which has stunning views, works of art, and is also the home to Andorra's constitutional architecture. Built as a manor house in the late 16th century, the stately Casa de la Vall is probably Andorra's most iconic building. From 1702 until 2011 it housed the Andorran Parliament, one of Europe's oldest -and the smallest - and it's fascinating architecturally, historically and culturally. Why not take a guided tour and soak up the atmosphere? The new Consell General, the Parliament since 2011, is right next door. You can also pay a visit to the Congress and Exhibition Centre and check out what's on there.

The capital of Andorra is also home to a number of significant pre-Romanesque and Romanesque religious buildings as the 12th century San Esteve Church which boasts its original semicircular apse and bell tower, making it well worth a visit, plus entrance is free! Other historical places to check out include the nearby Casa Guillemó and Cal Cintet in Plaça Príncep Benlloch, and Casa Felipó, one of several examples of early 20th century granite architecture, along with Vilanova clinic, located in Plaça Rebés.
