Immerse yourself in the world of the Edo period

“Japan: A Story of Love and War” offers an insight into the changes undergone by Japanese society between the Edo period and the start of the 20^th century.

The common theme of the exhibition is ukiyo-e, an artistic genre based on coloured woodblock prints that reached its zenith in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868) and the Meiji era (1868-1912).

“Japan: A Story of Love and War” includes works by a number of renowned engravers, as well as a selection of objects from Japan such as samurai armour, kimonos, everyday utensils and photographs. The exhibition explores a range of subjects including the world of the geisha, the legend of the samurai warrior, kabuki theatre, and the idealised perception of nature.

It provides an excellent example of how love and war have acted as universal drivers of creation throughout human history.

As usual, the CAEE has prepared a variety of free workshops and activities around the exhibition, which are suitable for visitors of all ages.

“Japan: A Story of Love and War” can be visited at the CAEE until 23 September.

CAEE opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 1:30 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm. In July and August the centre is also open on Sunday from 9.30 am to 1:30 pm.
