Andorra’s solid relationship with the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup goes back a long way. Looking back over the years, Grandvalira has had FIS-approved slopes since 2007 and 2013, and has hosted international events, both for men and women. This is a brief review of the history of alpine skiing in our country.
Alpine skiing, Andorra’s national sport
Alpine skiing is of ‘national interest’ in Andorra, according to an official declaration in 1965. Not only in terms of the number of skiers, as demonstrated by the 30 Olympic skiers in our history, who have taken part in ten Olympic Games in recent decades. This sport can also be considered of ‘national interest’ at an organisational level: given that Grandvalira is the largest ski area in the Pyrenees, our vocation to host major events has led us to organise several major international tournaments.
These include various European Cup events in the men’s category (2009 and 2013) and women’s category (2008, 2010 and 2011), as well as the finals of this competition in 2014, 2015 and 2018. Initially, these were on the Avet slope and, since 2014, on the Avet and the Àliga slopes.
The Ski World Cup, in 2012, 2016 and 2019
The first time an FIS Alpine Ski World Cup event was held on Andorran snow was in 2012. It was the slalom and giant slalom events, which crowned Tessa Worley and Marlies Schild, respectively.
These skiers were also the stars of the Andorran event at the 2016 Alpine Ski World Cup. At the second world event in Andorra, the combined gold medal went to Marie-Michèle Gagnon and the super-G to Federica Brignone.
In the Finals of the 2019 FIS Alpine ski World Cup, the third event on Andorran slopes, the final overall ranking was led by Mikaela Shiffrin in the women’s category and Marcel Hirscher in the men’s category. Shiffrin won four globes: slalom, super-G, giant and overall. Hirscher, meanwhile, won three: slalom, giant and overall.
