THE EURO AND MONEY EXCHANGE IN ANDORRA
The euro (€) has been the official currency of Andorra since it was introduced in 2002. Prior to this, both the Spanish peseta and the French franc were considered legal tender.
In 2011, Andorra signed a monetary agreement with the European Union which allowed the Principality to issue Andorran euros starting in 2014. Andorra boasts the distinction of being the only country that mints euros with four different designs:
- The coat of arms of Andorra on 2 euro coins.
- Casa de la Vall, a historic building and the current headquarters of the General Council of Andorra, on 1 euro coins.
- Santa Coloma Romanesque church on 50, 20 and 10 cent coins.
- A Pyrenean chamois and a bearded vulture on 5, 2 and 1 cent coins.
You can exchange foreign currencies at bank branches.
Payment in foreign currencies is not usually permitted.
